The last decade has seen Michigander quietly emerge as a 21st century troubadour whose deft balance of rock energy, alternative adventurousness, and heart-on-his-sleeve songcraft continues to endear audiences and tastemakers alike. Born in Michigan and based in Nashville, singer, songwriter, and producer Jason Singer has steadily progressed one gig and release at a time. However, he truly steps into his own on his self-titled full-length debut album, Michigander. “The last ten years were awesome,” he says. “Everything built up to this point though. To make an analogy, the EPs were like television episodes of my story, and the album is the movie version. It’s blown up on the big screen. I’m just getting started, but this is my introduction to the world.” Throughout a busy 2024, he crafted what would become Michigander. Inspired by the likes of TV On The Radio, Blur, Idles, and The National, he embraced a newfound confidence and continued to sonically break down boundaries, taking his time.
Indie Exclusive - The "Family Tree" vocal group was born from a Brockington-Saunders family reunion. Dr. Elijah Saunders and Mrs. Venus Robinson organized the first gathering in Baltimore in 1975 to explore their shared heritage. At a second reunion in South Carolina in 1977, the Family Tree singers were formed. Dr. Saunders recognized their outstanding vocal talent and believed they could serve as God's messengers, sharing their message beyond just family events. With the creative direction and expertise of Julius Brockington, this LP was composed and recorded. Not much more is known about this Christian band, but they evolved from jamming at a family reunion to recording some of the finest gospel music of the 1970s. The result is a surprisingly well-produced and highly sought-after collection of songs. Though rooted in gospel, this record effortlessly blends into funk, soul, and dance. Now available on pink-colored vinyl.

All encased in 2-piece box (slipcase in slipcase), holographic foil type on spineFor the A Ghost Is Born recording, Wilco was Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Leroy Bach, Glenn Kotche, and Mikael Jorgensen; Jim O'Rourke, who mixed the band's previous release Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, co-produced the album with Wilco. Leroy Bach left Wilco at the completion of the sessions and the band announced the addition of two new members: Pat Sansone and Nels Cline. Sansone and Cline toured with Wilco to promote AGIB and that lineup has remained unchanged since 2004. As Tweedy said to Mehr for his new liner note, "Making that record, and then finding this lineup, that was the start of something-of having a band that can play anything. That's why, twenty years later, we're still here and still going. "Wilco first began sessions for what would become A Ghost Is Born in early 2002 at Chicago's Soma E. M. S. , where they had mixed Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Much of the album was tracked live in the studio with O'Rourke and engineer Chris Shaw. They also reunited there with engineer and soon-to-be-bandmate Mikael Jorgensen. At Soma, the band began sketching out music using Tweedy's notebooks of lyrics, poetry, and prose. Mehr notes: "In between more traditional song tracking, the group would engage in a series of conceptual improvisations in the studio. These musical experiments, broadly known as 'Fundamentals'... were part of what Kotche said was 'an attempt to search for a new group identity. To see what we could make this band into. '"In the fall of 2003, the band relocated to New York to finish recording at Sear Sound. "It seemed like the band needed to get out of Chicago, get out of the working mode they'd been in, and only be thinking about making a record," O'Rourke told Mehr. There, playing together in the corner of a large studio, the album began to take it's final shape. Emerging from a period of addiction and rehab, Tweedy discussed how he feels about A Ghost Is Born in retrospect. As he told Mehr, "I was worried the album was going to feel like something dark and not me anymore. But the album was ahead of me as a person. It was the part of me that I was trying to preserve-enthusiastic and furious about the world, as well as open and loving. I reached that in the music, before I could get there emotionally on my own. "

Across two decades of work and wounds, HTRK's sound has shape-shifted between densities and intensities, noise and nakedness, but never wavered in it's delicate poetic gravity. In HTRK's sound world, cavernous reverberations of dub techno are mixed with frosted post-punk motifs and the gravelly imperfections of industrial, reimagined in the setting of a dingy basement.Like all HTRK albums, Marry Me Tonight was singular in sound and circumstance. It's the only album the outfit recorded from start to finish as a trio, and it's the only HTRK record that bears the co-production stamp of Rowland S. Howard. Breathy, caustic, and rife with contradiction, Marry Me Tonight took the raw material recorded on 2005's Nostalgia and transformed it into a pop record - pop that buckled and warped beneath the glare of Howard, fellow producer Lindsay Gravina, and the HTRK trio: Jonnine Standish, Nigel Yang and Sean Stewart. Howard died at the end of 2009; Stewart died the year after. Things would never be the same. The band would carry on and reach new heights despite it all, but as a trio, this is their definitive document.

This six-cut date was arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson, featuring a mix of musicians supporting Rollins including Kenny Burrell (guitar), J.J. Johnson (trombone) and Phil Woods (alto sax), among others. Rollins attempts to capture the textures of life through his incisive and energetic playing, his coherent improvisations and variations on musical themes. While "Alfie's Theme" and it's variants make the most lasting impression, "He's Younger Than You" is touching, laced with regret. And the sensual, relaxed "On Impulse" has a nice sense of immediacy. Universe Room is the eighteenth Guided by Voices album in ten years and packs a vast mix of energy levels and sounds into seventeen diverse tracks in less than forty minutes. The new record ventures into truly surprising territory, where barely any song segments and choruses are revisited and fidelity daringly shifts between lo-fi and hi-fi. "I wanted to create, hopefully, an experience, kind of a wild ride, where the listener would want to hear it multiple times in order to grasp all the sections and fields of sound to discover something new with each listen," says Robert Pollard. "I trimmed down the songs so that there wasn't a lot of repetition, so you get a lot of sections that happen only once or twice."Universe Room embodies a realm of new horizons for Guided by Voices, who continue to redefine and expand as they blast off to unpredictable worlds.
Famously formed in 8th grade for a school talent show, The Donnas began as a self-styled co-ed answer to The Ramones, playing gleefully unapologetic, pop-punk paeans to adolescent alienation and hedonism from a decidedly female perspective.
Gold Medal marks a move away from The Donnas' harder/faster ethos towards a more polished (acoustic guitars.whaaat?) pop sound veering towards '70s psychedelia under the helm of Avril Lavigne producer Butch Walker. And you can tell it from the album's graphics, which flash vintage, Peter Max-esque squiggles on the front cover and feature a faux black light poster inside (which Real Gone Music have reproduced for this reissue along with the original printed inner sleeve).
TOMMY CASTRO / CLOSER TO THE BONE Guitar-slinging, soul-singing blues and rock legend Tommy Castro gets back to his crowd-pleasing blues roots on Closer To The Bone. Tommy's one of the most popular roots music artists in the world due to his infectious albums and one of the busiest live performance schedules in all of music. His 2021 studio release, Tommy Castro Presents A Bluesman Came To Town, has scanned well.
Produced by longtime Heartworms collaborator Dan Carey, Glutton For Punishment combines the propulsive, motorik tendencies of gothic stalwarts Depeche Mode, with the lyrical dexterity of PJ Harvey, and the off-kilter rhythms of LCD Soundsystem into a powerful sonic onslaught that is entirely Heartworms. "With my EP, people kind of pigeonholed me into post-punk," she says. "I was like, 'Cool, I can do that, but I can also do way more' - I can do post-punk, but I can also be poppy and catchy, and this album represents that. I think people might be surprised when they hear it."

Seattle’s beloved subterranean music iconoclast Skerik has long found the city of New Orleans a balm for his inherently subversive musical approach. Currently calling the Crescent City his second home, the saxophonist fully embraces this dichotomy between his own profane instincts and the Big Easy’s rich jazz traditions with Compersion Quartet — a band in which the he’s joined by fellow incendiary musicians: pianist Brian Hass, bassist James Singleton and drummer Simon Lott. Recorded in New Orleans, the quartet's self-titled debut album presents a series of studio improvisations that amalgamate in fits and starts of cinematic beauty, syncopated melodism and mystic sonic experimentalism. The inception of Compersion Quartet can be traced back to Saucefest, the multimedia festival within a festival, founded and curated by Skerik, that happens annually on the middle Tuesday night of New Orleans Jazzfest when a disparate gathering of local and traveling musicians come together in various configurations for an evening of fearless, no-holds-barred musical collaboration. "The history between the four of us goes way back, but this specific quartet would eventually come together through Saucefest," explains Skerik. "I met Brian Haas in the early years of his trio Jacob Jazz Odyssey after he heard me in Critters Buggin. I used to play with Simon Lott in Malestrom Trio along with Brian Coogan. They were both part of the early Saucefest events. I started playing with James Singleton on Johnny Vidacovich gigs and in other combinations. He also did some early Saucefest performances. We share a related collective history. We all are from the same mother of music, siblings without rivalry." Throughout the album's 11 tracks, Compersion Quartet explores deconstruction and rebirth, while undermining the math of music through enigmatic human vibrations intrinsic to improvisation. Like the green lizard adorning the album's cover art, just when the listener thinks they've captured the music’s essence, its tail detaches and it escapes back into the unknown. "To us, Compersion Quartet means to support each other and everyone on earth. Let's leave it at that. I want there to be more mystery and less analytical talk about this music," concludes Skerik. "There's really no point in trying to describe the indescribable."

"ANTIFRAGILE" marks All That Remains' first full length release since 2018.All That Remains have built an unbreakable axis between pit-splitting metal and anthemic melodies. This signature balance has defined the platinum-certified band's output since day one. It's why the quintet- Philip Labonte [lead vocals], Jason Richardson [lead guitar], Mike Martin [rhythm guitar], Anthony Barone [drums], and Matt Deis [bass]-have notched multiple Top 10 Active Rock Radio hits, sold out shows worldwide, and generated over half-a-billion streams. For as far as they've come, they've never lost sight of the cold Massachusetts underground where the guys first cut their teeth, preserving the same spirit without compromise. They've weathered the changing tides of a fickle business, unspeakable tragedy, and all manner of conflict only to come out stronger than ever on the other side. This strength surges through their tenth full-length album and first independent offering. The album embodies everything All That Remains are at the highest level."I think we've managed to forge our own identity independent of every other group," notes Phil. "From our scene, we were among a very few bands who didn't go on a long-term hiatus, stop playing, or find other jobs. All That Remains has been what I do for the last 20 years. The fact that we managed to dodge all of the trends and be ourselves is something I'm very proud of."By sticking to their guns, All That Remains have continued to thrive on their own terms as well. Among many accolades, signature hit "Two Weeks" received a platinum certification from the RIAA, while "What If I Was Nothing" and their cover of "The Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks each reached gold status. Meanwhile, 2008's Overcome went gold, and For We Are Many cracked the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. Not to mention, they have scored five Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top Rock Albums Chart, landing four in the Top 5. During 2022, the group launched a successful sold-out anniversary tour in celebration of their seminal LP The Fall of Ideals-which Revolver hailed as "one of metalcore's most essential records" and Loudwire christened "a genre-defining album." However, they have also endured trials and tribulations that might've ended most bands. Following the death of original lead guitarist Oli Herbert, the band welcomed Jason Richardson to the fold. "We spent a long time trying to figure out what All That Remains looks like without Oli," admits Phil. "It was weird, and it's probably why it took so long to get started. We remodeled our studio too. Except for what we'd written in my mom's basement, everything we'd made with Oli was done in that studio. The dynamic was different. Mike has written a whole lot more on this record. At the same time, Jason has his own style and sound, and it's filtered through what we do."Ultimately, All That Remains are still standing strong."I'm incredibly grateful to anyone who has listened to our music or come to a show," Phil leaves off. "We survived in a changing business and world. I'm hugely satisfied with the success we've seen, but there's so much more to come. If you were a fan before, I think you're going to be a fan of this record." - Rick Florino, December 2023

Green Vinyl. The arrival of a new Mogwai album - their eleventh - is cause for great celebration. The album's title, The Bad Fire, is a working-class Glaswegian term for Hell. It reflects the difficult time that members of the band were going through. New to the studio was American producer John Congleton, known for his work with Explosions In The Sky, Sigur RĂłs, John Grant and pretty much everyone in between. Congleton's work can be heard on the album's three singles. The album opener "God Gets You Back" sounds like Daft Punk being hunted by My Bloody Valentine, while "Fanzine Made Of Flesh" sounds like a victory parade for a baby yeti; and "Lion Rumpus" does actually sound like a lion rumpus. The music of Mogwai is a difficult thing to describe, but an easy thing to experience. At punishing volume, it can annihilate your body, leaving you as little more than a head which should by rights fall helplessly to the ground. Yet the music contains an updraft, a sense of beauty encased in the onslaught. This holds you up, suspended and empowered, reminding you that paradise is your birthright. This is especially true of The Bad Fire. It may have been created in dark conditions, but all that is transcended by the act of four musicians working together here, now, in the moment - the only place where Mogwai exist.
The trio of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Julie Fowlis, and Karine Polwart first came together as a writing experiment coming out of the pandemic lockdown. With touring off the calendar, multi-Award winning US singer-songwriter Carpenter was looking for something new and reached out to Fowlis and Polwart, two highly acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriters whose work she had long admired. Prompted by admiration and respect for each other’s work, the trio quickly came up with a plan and, once able, met in Northern Scotland for an extended writing retreat to see what magic could be made. The success of this initial experiment led to a second writing session and, in early 2024, the 10-song album Looking For The Thread was recorded at Real World Studios in Box, England, with Josh Kaufman (Bob Weir, The National, The Hold Steady) producing and a world-class band of musicians: Rob Burger (piano, organ, accordion, keys),Chris Vatalaro (drums, percussion), Cameron Ralston (bass), Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh (hardanger d’amore) and Josh Kaufman himself (guitar, keys). The album features tracks written by all three artists, who take turns performing and collaborating on each song. Looking For The Thread will release on January 24, 2025 with Thirty Tigers worldwide.

The New Yorker says, 'Cautious Clay has the kind of voice that seems to emote and connect without effort; it burrows warmly into acoustic guitar melodies and floats atop more maximalist backdrops.' Revolt TV says, 'Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, Cautious Clay, consistently delivers phenomenal songs including his latest Medasin-produced track titled 'Honest Enough.' In 2018 Cautious Clay rose to new heights with a feature on HBO's Insecure Season 3 Soundtrack, a Tiny Desk on NPR, performances at TIDAL X BROOKLYN and The Soul Train Awards on BET, sold-out headline shows, collaborations with notable artists such as John Mayer, as well as attention from VIBE, The New York Times, Pitchfork and more. NPR called Cautious Clay's Blood Type EP one of '2018's best' and DJ Booth featured Blood Type as one of their 10 Best Non-Rap Albums of the Year. Cautious' title track 'Cold War' was number 29 on Sirius XMU's top 40 tracks of 2018. Cautious Clay performed a Tiny Desk on NPR. See the incredible artist shine as he performs three original tracks on the iconic Tiny Desk set. Cautious also performed 'Cold War' with John Mayer on his Instagram talk show, Current Mood. 'There's something special about him, and he keeps revealing new layers to his creativity that continue to pull us in.' - Complex 'Cautious Clay continues to shine with new single 'Crowned.' - Hypebeast 'Crowned' is ear candy for any listener but also serves as vitamins to the consciousness.' - VIBE Pitchfork featured the 'Cold War' video, calling it 'a meditation on human interaction in the age of dating apps and social media.' The New York Times says, 'A self-indictment delivered like an R&B love song, 'Stolen Moments' itemizes a lot of good reasons to back out of a romance with the singer... Josh Karpeh, who records as Cautious Clay, croons those and more over cozy acoustic guitar chords and a creeping bass line, with wisps of falsetto vocals and saxophone in the background.' NPR says, 'Stolen Moments,'... is a stunning, hushed lament that plays out like a lovers' quarrel about commitment (or lack thereof) that's still reeling long after the last words have been thrown... By the last guitar strums, it's clear: 'Stolen Moments' is a luxurious kiss-off told a day too late.'

Loudon's great 2024 show in London was recorded and includes new material of his own and some perfectly executed cover versions of songs by others. In 2024 Loudon played a short residency at Nell's Jazz and Blues in London. Because the shows were being recorded, alongside some of his current favorites, he took the opportunity to include some brand-new material of his own and a few perfectly executed cover versions of songs by others that he has admired over the years. The twenty-one tracks that made it onto this album make it an essential addition to the three previously released live albums that dot the discography of his fifty-plus-year recording career. As can be expected this is a fine example of the man doing what he does best. It is another chapter in this remarkable life that's been preserved to the artist's satisfaction to the extent that he is happy to share it with the world in the form of this NEW release. "Hailing from Castlewood, VA in the heart of Appalachia, the five-piece 49 Winchester serves it up greasy, whether it's Southern fried rock, honky tonk country, sentimental moments tickling the fringes of Americana, or a version of soul that takes all of those influences and stews them. It's always Southern, but the variety of flavors you're served keeps you on your toes for 10 tracks. And eventually an album you start off thinking might be good for a quick hoot turns out running through a range of emotions you may have not been ready for, though you sure do appreciate the ride afterwards." - Saving Country Music

Reuniting with legendary producer Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden, Journey, Joe Bonamassa), Taylor pushes the boundaries of blues rock, weaving in threads of Americana, indie rock, and retro '80s pop. Six years after her critically acclaimed album forevher, Shurais back with her highly anticipated third studio album I Got Too Sad For My Friends. A pastoral blend of chamber pop, sixties folk and campfire Americana, it builds Shura’s introspective songwriting out into a vast landscape more tranquil than the soulful bounce of forevher, and more rustic than the brooding synth-pop of her 2016 debut Nothing’s Real. Though it’s an album rooted in themes of depression and loneliness, I Got Too Sad For My Friends is far from downcast. Instead, it stays fully present in its feelings and plunges its fingers into the earth – even when it can be painful to do so. Produced by Luke Smith (Foals, Shygirl, Depeche Mode) and featuring collaborations with Cassandra Jenkins, Becca Mancari and Helado Negro, it retains Shura’s usual crystalline sound and precision while introducing a different kind of warmth and earthiness.

The full album is immediately arresting, spectacular from top to bottom.
Nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, and shot in the glorious, vintage VistaVision format, Brady Corbet’sThe Brutaliststands as a monumental achievement in filmmaking. Opening with a mesmerizing and continuous 10-minute overture, composer Daniel Blumberg’s music sets the stage for the film’s epic narrative, which spans multiple decades and follows fictional Hungarian architect László Toth (played by Adrien Brody) as he rebuilds his life in post-war America.
Encompassing large-scale brass orchestrations, intimately lyrical piano melodies and freewheeling, improvisational jazz,The Brutalist’s score is as ambitious and broad in scope as the film itself. Envisioning the score as slabs of sound – rich and resonating while also measured and restrained – the music developed into the sonic embodiment of the Brutalist design aesthetic, where imposing scale and raw textures meet values of simplicity and economy. To craft its singular sound, Blumberg worked with a cast of boundary-pushing musicians and improvisers, traveling across the UK and Europe with a custom-built remote recording setup to capture his players on location. Exploiting the tension between the fluidity of improvised music and the meticulous precision of film scoring, Blumberg coaxed out beautifully rich and resonant performances from his collaborators, including avant-garde innovators Axel Dörner (trumpet), Evan Parker (saxophone), Sophie Agnel (piano), and John Tilbury (piano), to name a few.
For the film's frenetic and intoxicating jazz club scene, Blumberg assembled a jazz quartet (comprised of Pierre Borel on saxophone, Simon Sieger on piano, Joel Grip on bass, and Antonin Gerbal on drums) to perform improvised versions of his themes live on set, resulting in one of the film’s most electrifying numbers, as well as additional period-specific pieces that appear throughout the soundtrack. For the film’s 1980s-set Epilogue, Blumberg traveled to New York to work with synth-pop pioneer Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Erasure), deconstructing and rebuilding the film’s main theme into a redemptive, synth and drum machine-driven dance track befitting of the new era.
The score was mixed and co-produced by longtime Scott Walker collaborator Peter Walsh, who also worked on Blumberg’s past three records.
Pressed on 180-gram vinyl, the 2-LP release from Milan Records features printed sleeves housed in a gatefold package designed byThe Brutalisttitle designer Sebastian Pardo in close collaboration with Daniel Blumberg.
